vichy thermal water treatments' history
The Romans were the first to discover and use the therapeutic properties of Vichy's thermal waters. Archelogists have found at least three water sources used at that time. The thermal pools became the first of many « Signature » Vichy treatments and inspired today's Hydromassaging bath.
The Jet shower with invigorating or lipo-eliminating Vichy thermal water was already performed since the 17th century with the construction of the first ever thermal institution in Vichy: « La Maison du Roi ». We must thank Madame de Sévigné for having made Vichy's thermal water famous. These waters healed rheumatisms: « It is certain that these waters are miraculous » and gave beautiful skin « This water gives smooth and toned skin ». During the 19th century, the thermal town gained an international reputation due to Napoleon III building a grand thermal resort.
Vichy is then backed by the medical community and visionaries who believed in hollistic medicine, increasing the range of medical thermal treatments. Thus in 1833 the Vichy thermal water foot baths appeared, to increase blood circulation and stimulate the limbs.
Since its creation in 1896 by Dr. Berthe, the 4 hands Vichy shower massage has become Vichy's most famous treatment. Founder of the first hydrotherapy centre at Vichy, Dr. Berthe decided to combine the 4 hands massage method with the thermal water's mineralising and relaxing virtues to produce a wonderful thermal innovation in Vichy. The fame attributed to this treatment then quickly spread internationally.
Produced in the area around Vichy, Vichy vegeto-mineral muds are the result of a slow soaking process, created from a base of white clay (kaolin) beds harvested locally and irrigated for more than a month by thermal mineral springs : Dômes spring (66 °C) and Lys (60.5 °C) spring. On the surface of the clay, colonies of blue algae, high in organic compounds, then appear spontaneously. The mixture is then blended in order to obtain a homogenized mud. A wonderful concentrate with active properties that are then unleashed into the body by contact with the skin !
